New freeway toll system in Croatia: What travelers need to know

Croatia is planning to introduce a modern, electronic highway toll system in 2026. This system will optimize the flow of traffic on freeways, as vehicles will be able to pay tolls automatically without stopping at toll stations. The new technology will make traveling much easier, especially for holidaymakers who frequently use their cars to get to the Croatian Adriatic coast.

How the new system works

The new toll system is based on two technologies:

  1. ENC device (Electronic Toll Collection): A small electronic device is attached to the windshield of the vehicle and automatically registers the toll when passing through the toll gantries. It is mandatory for trucks, but remains optional for cars.
  2. License plate recognition (ALPR): This technology is particularly practical for vacationers, as the toll is automatically billed via the license plate. Drivers do not need to purchase any special devices.

Advantages for travelers

This system significantly reduces the time spent at toll booths, which is particularly helpful during the peak season. Instead of having to wait at toll booths, holidaymakers can drive straight on and spend more time relaxing at their destination, such as The Moments Cottage.

Registration options

There are several ways to register for the new toll system:

  • Online via a special website where the bank details for automatic debiting are stored.
  • On site at HAC sales outlets or authorized partners, such as petrol stations.
  • Fast registration directly on the highway via special lanes that allow you to register without long waiting times.

Introduction and schedule

The new system is expected to be introduced on all Croatian freeways from 2026. The contract was concluded with the companies SkyToll and TollNet, which have already implemented similar systems in other European countries.
